Platform Engineer (Java, Spring Boot & TypeScript) | Contract (12month) | Auckland (Hybrid)
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Full Stack / Platform Engineer to join a talented engineering team focused on improving developer productivity and building world-class internal developer platforms.
About the Role
This is a hands-on role where you'll leverage your expertise in Java Spring Boot, TypeScript and Backstage to create scalable backend services, reusable software templates, and self-service capabilities that enable engineering teams to move faster and more efficiently.
Working closely with platform engineers, DevOps specialists and product teams, you'll help shape and enhance the developer experience through modern engineering practices and platform capabilities.
Your key responsibilities include:
- Developing robust backend services using Java Spring Boot and microservices architecture.
- Designing and building Backstage Scaffolder templates to support self-service developer workflows.
- Customising and extending Backstage through frontend and backend plugin development using TypeScript.
- Integrating Backstage with enterprise tooling, APIs, source control platforms and internal services.
You'll be a seasoned engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, enabling other developers, and building platforms that make software delivery easier and more efficient. You'll bring:
- 10–15 years' experience in software engineering, including at least 6–8 years working with Java Spring Boot and microservices.
- Strong TypeScript development experience. Bonus: experience working with Backstage.
- Proven experience building Backstage Scaffolder templates and custom plugins, and managing Backstage catalog entities, systems and components.
- Solid understanding of REST APIs, microservices architectures and Git-based development workflows.
