This well-known NZ infrastructure and essential services business is looking for an experienced Data & Analytics Lead to lead delivery across a team of engineers, an AI application engineer, and data scientists. The practice has grown significantly over the last two and a half years and is in the middle of a genuine, well-funded digital transformation. The foundations are solid. Now they need someone to build on them.
The Role
- Own technical delivery across a team of 6, setting the bar for how data engineering gets done
- Stay active as a senior practitioner, contributing directly to complex data engineering solutions and data products
- Define and enforce standards for data modelling, code quality, testing, and deployment
- Drive architecture decisions and contribute to the technical roadmap as the platform scales
- Implement data governance controls including lineage, data contracts, access management, and quality frameworks
- Mentor and develop the team through code reviews, pairing, and hands-on collaboration
- Work closely with the Head of Data to mature the practice and lift data capability across the business
Must-haves:
- 5+ years enterprise data engineering and analytics experience
- Advanced Snowflake expertise including administration, performance tuning, and cost optimisation in production
- Strong dbt proficiency across complex, scalable transformation workflows
- Dimensional data modelling experience (Kimball, star schema) and solid CI/CD and DevOps practices
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop technical teams, with the communication skills to work credibly with non-technical stakeholders
- The maturity to bring a team along with you rather than just build around them
- Fivetran and Azure stack exposure
- Experience with AI or ML engineering in a data platform context
The business has committed to data as a strategic priority, and the investment is real. You'll have full autonomy over architecture and design decisions, a backlog of greenfield work, and a strong Snowflake partnership that includes community and events involvement. The team is good, the mandate is clear, and the Head of Data is technically sharp and easy to work with.
Hybrid working with two-three days per week in the office, free on-site carparking, and the flexibility to get the work done your way.
