This role is less about building frameworks and more about thinking like a breaker, identifying gaps, stress-testing integrations, and uncovering failure points across distributed services.
You’ll be working across a modern testing stack, including:
- Java (core, strong OOP)
- Spring Boot (deep understanding of internals)
- JUnit 5 & Mockito
- Testcontainers & Docker
- Kafka (producer/consumer basics)
- JSON Schema validation (contract testing)
- Maven & CI/CD pipelines
You’ll sit close to engineering, working across a Java/Spring Boot ecosystem to validate integrations across APIs, services, and event streams. This is a hands-on role where your ability to think critically and test beyond the “happy path” will be key.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Designing and executing end-to-end integration tests across microservices
- Writing unit and integration tests using JUnit 5 and Mockito
- Using Testcontainers and Docker to spin up real environments (Kafka, DBs)
- Validating data contracts using JSON schema
- Identifying edge cases, failure scenarios, and integration gaps
- Mocking external dependencies where required (e.g. Mockito/WireMock)
- Running and maintaining tests via Maven within CI/CD pipelines (GitHub/Jenkins)
- Working closely with engineers to improve code quality and test coverage
You are a seasoned QA engineer that enjoys getting into the guts of integration layers. You'll bring:
- Strong Java development background with a QA mindset
- Proven experience testing Spring Boot applications end-to-end
- Deep understanding of unit vs integration vs contract testing
- Experience designing negative tests and failure scenarios
- Confidence working with containers (Docker/Testcontainers)
- Exposure to event-driven systems (Kafka or similar)
**Please note that only applicants currently in New Zealand with the appropriate work rights (valid visa) will be considered.
