Auckland's data landscape is evolving fast, and this organisation is right in the middle of it. A well-known Auckland council-controlled organisation is looking for a Data Engineer to join their Digital team and play a pivotal role in building the pipelines, platforms and architecture that drive how the business makes decisions.
This is a meaningful role with real scope — you'll be working across a modern Azure stack, shaping data infrastructure, and contributing to a genuine digital transformation programme.
The Role
- Design, build and maintain data pipelines and integration workflows
- Work across an Azure-centric environment including Synapse Analytics, ADF, Delta Lake and Databricks
- Develop and maintain data models, warehouses and data lake solutions
- Collaborate with data analysts, architects and business stakeholders
- Drive improvements in data quality, reliability and pipeline performance
- Support data migration and systems integration initiatives
- Communicate complex data concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
Must-haves:
- 5+ years in a Data Engineering role
- Strong, hands-on Python and PySpark skills — these are non-negotiable
- Solid SQL and database design experience
- Proven Azure platform exposure, with Synapse Analytics a clear advantage
- Working knowledge of data warehousing, data lake architecture and ETL/ELT processes
- Familiarity with Medallion Architecture, Delta Lake or similar modern data patterns
- Experience in the New Zealand public sector
- Azure Data Engineer certification (or working towards it)
- Power BI or similar visualisation tool exposure
- Knowledge of NoSQL platforms such as MongoDB or Hadoop
- Understanding of ML/AI principles applied to data
You'll be joining a respected Auckland organisation genuinely committed to becoming data-driven. The team is tight-knit enough that your work has real impact, and the roadmap ahead is substantial. This is a permanent role with hybrid working on offer — a solid setup if you want your engineering skills put to use on infrastructure that matters to Auckland.
