The Role
Sitting within a small, close-knit Business Intelligence team, you'll be the engine behind data migration and pipeline development across a significant transformation programme.
Day to day you'll be:
- Building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines to migrate data from multiple source organisations into a new centralised platform
- Developing data mapping, cleansing and transformation frameworks using a medallion architecture (bronze, silver, gold layers)
- Implementing and maintaining dbt models for transformation, testing and documentation
- Working with Azure and Snowflake to design and manage the data platform
- Collaborating with solution architects, business analysts, vendors and external data teams to resolve integration challenges
- Ensuring data handling meets privacy, security and Māori Data Sovereignty requirements
- Building repeatable onboarding playbooks so each new data source can be brought on efficiently
Must-haves:
- 3+ years in a data engineering role with hands-on ETL/ELT pipeline experience
- Azure and Snowflake skills
- Proficiency in SQL and Python for transformation, scripting and automation
- Experience with tools like Azure Data Factory, Fivetran or similar ingestion platforms
- Working knowledge of dbt or comparable transformation frameworks
- Solid understanding of data governance, privacy and security practices
- The communication skills to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
- Power BI or similar BI tool experience
- Familiarity with Git, CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code
- Experience working in a complex, multi-stakeholder or public sector environment
This isn't a BAU data role. You'll be working on a programme that genuinely matters, with a clear mandate, strong organisational support, and visibility at a senior level. The team is small, the work is meaningful, and there's flexibility built in. Based in Auckland, with a three days in / two days remote split.
