FAQ’s
What does the next few years look like for IT workers in Wellington?
After a tumultuous few years in the market, with post COVID layoffs at global organisations affecting Wellington SaaS companies and more recently the sweeping cuts to Government departments, it would be unwise to make any bold predications here. However, over the past few months we have seen a significant uptick in demand for talented IT workers, in particular Data Analysts & Engineers, Full Stack Developers and Cyber Security professionals and the sentiment and enthusiasm is certainly a lot brighter than it has been.
What impact is AI having on recruitment/employment opportunities?
AI is being used more to help with initial screening of applications to cut down on time, candidates need to really highlight their specific skills in relation to the role they are applying for.
AI is also being used to automate repetitive / administrative tasks, meaning fewer “entry level” or admin roles may be needed. But outright job losses are still rare. There is also a drive to upskill existing workforces so people can work alongside AI tools rather than be replaced by them.
NZ companies are increasingly seeking talent with AI-related skills (machine learning, data engineering, etc.).
What skills should I be looking to add
This is a question I get from people who are starting/early stages of their career as well as senior professionals.
It’s a different answer for both, at the beginning of a career in IT you should be looking to get as much experience & exposure to different technologies & environments. Find out what you like & what you are good at while always looking to learn and grow, also interpersonal skills being learned at this stage of the career are essential.
For more experienced operators it’s a mixture of honing those skills you’ve accumulated to date while also remaining engaged with the emerging technologies.
