Project Description

Sharon Ward Duncan

Senior Consultant – HR, Finance & Senior Leadership

My Biography

With over 25 years’ experience in the recruitment industry, we are fortunate to have Sharon recruiting in the HR, Finance, Operations and Senior Leadership space. After graduating from the University of Waikato with a Social Science degree, Sharon began her earlier career in Investment Banking, in Wellington. Driven by people and building relationships, Sharon found her niche at a specialist Accounting and Finance recruitment consultancy in London. Sharon’s proven results and leadership skills saw her move to becoming an Executive Director of the consultancy in 1994. Returning to New Zealand in 1996, Sharon furthermore took on multiple leadership positions and continued recruiting across many disciplines, including Finance, HR, Operations, and senior leadership positions. Sharon’s business-performance accountability, commercial experience and client relationships with NZX listed companies, privately-owned companies, government agencies and Not-For-Profit organisations gives her an all-round appreciation of organisational issues and the executive competencies required by them.

My Why

I like being connected with the world of business. There are a lot of other jobs I could do but working with people as they develop their careers and build their organisations and knowing I have a positive effect on their success is so rewarding for me.

My Desert Island, 3 things that I would take

A desert island sounds bliss, as long as I have my sunglasses, sunhat and a good book or…my kindle if the desert island has internet access?

My Weekend

I like to refresh by switching off the commercial side of my life with getting outdoors, mostly walking along the local beaches with a good coffee at the end as a just reward and even better, brunch in the sun. Exploring beautiful places around the country is a lovely weekend away from the chores. However, keeping up with family activities and friends consumes most of my weekends. If I can find some space to switch on my creative side I do, whether it be flicking through a new recipe book for inspiration in the kitchen or reading a contemporary art magazine…better still, visiting an art gallery with friends is a rare weekend luxury. Skiing at Whakapapa, if the crowds aren’t too big, is a highlight in the winter. But I am increasingly wishing I was in Queenstown! In the summer, a highlight is getting out on the water, either on a friend’s boat somewhere in the Hauraki Gulf or down to Lake Taupo where we have a small boat. My weekends are never long enough…even though I love my job!

My Success

Besides having a happy family…At 21, I completed my University degree and survived 21 days on an Outward Bound Course in the Marlborough Sounds. In my 20’s and 30’s, I travelled around parts of Europe with London as a base for five years; and, it was in London where I commenced my career in recruitment and I’ve never looked back, as I love my work helping people with their careers and helping organisations go from strength to strength with great people. In my early 30’s, on one trip back to NZ from London, I spent six weeks in Africa, travelling on the back of a truck with eleven others. In my 40’s, it was building up and then selling a great business that still thrives today. In my 50’s, time will tell!

My Alternative

If not in the HR and Recruitment industry I would like to be an Interior Designer or Architect specialising in high-end residential property, building beautiful homes.
